Gaining Good Health By Healthy Eating Habits

Obesity is a serious health threat that is faced by all countries. Modern busy life makes people follow unhealthy eating habits, thereby resulting in a major section of people being overweight. There are a variety of diet plans that people follow to try to beat the excess fat and burn the pounds. On a daily basis, new fat burners hit the market and the number of people who are drawn to each option that comes along, is large.

While many of the weight loss options that hit the market do help people lose weight, the results are not permanent. If you wish to lose weight, you need to consider a long term solution, rather than just temporary ones that get rid of fat, only to replace it with extra fat later. A healthy diet is the best way in which to get fit and stay healthy. A healthy diet does not mean that you need to starve yourself silly or torture yourself by abstaining from foods that you love. All that it implies is that you need to make a few changes in your diet and eating habits that will help your body look and feel good.

  • Include foods in your diet that are high in nutrients. There is no single food that supplies all the nutrients that the body requires. Therefore, study the Food Guide Pyramid and the Nutrition Fact panel that comes on foods. You will be able to ensure that you are getting your daily share of proteins, carbohydrates, fiber, vitamins and minerals.
  • Include vegetables, fruits and whole grains in your diet. These will boost your metabolism, and are also low in calories. These foods can taste amazing, if cooked well. So hunt for a good cookbook and prepare some lip-smacking dishes.
  • Keep a tab on your weight. This, again, does not mean that you need to be obsessed with each pound that is gained or lost. Exercise regularly, and if you find that there is unexplained weight loss or gain, it is wise to consult a medical professional.
  • Eat regular meals which are of moderate portions. Do not gorge on food all at one point of time and starve yourself at other times. Eat 4 to 6 medium sized meals each day. This will keep your body stable through the day. Also, reduce the size of the plates you have around the house. You will not be tempted to eat more, in this case.
  • Drink a lot of water. Water flushes out toxins and other unnecessary things from your body and keeps you healthy and hydrated. Never compromise on drinking 6 to 8 glasses of water each day.
  • Make changes to your diet gradually. Any changes that you make overnight will not last as your body is sure to rebel against the changes. Give your body time to get into the routine of your new diet and introduce changes one by one. This is the best way in which to gain good health with your new, healthy eating habits.
  • Keep in mind that there are no "good" or "bad" foods. All foods have their role and purpose. It is up to you to balance your eating habits and consume them in moderation.

Fruits have high water content and these are therefore ideal choices for those who would like to opt for low calorie, filling food. They keep the body satisfied for a longer time and are rich in vitamins and fibre. Some of the recommended low calorie foods are lemon, sweet lime, grapefruit, guava, papaya, tomatoes, pears, watermelon, cranberries, citrus fruits, blueberries and strawberries. The health benefits from these are numerous as they are nature's own health supplements in terms of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

Whole grains are broken down slowly during digestion and are also rich in fibre and carbohydrates. Blood sugar levels are brought under control and sugar craving is combated. Some whole grains that are beneficial are rye, barley, maize, pearl millet, brown rice, wheat pasta, sorghum and oatmeal.

Almonds and walnuts are great for the health and will keep you bubbling with energy for much longer than other foods. They provide you with the needed fat, protein, minerals and micronutrients that are need to help you burn calories and stay fit.

Low-Fat Dairy Products

Consuming foods rich in calcium will help prevent the release of calcitrol in the body, which is a hormone that stimulates the storage of fat. Go in for dairy products, but choose the products that are low in fat, such as low fat cheese and skimmed milk. Apart from adding to your reserves of calcium, it will also help you burn fat.

Fatty Fish

The omega-3 fatty acids that are present in fatty fish actually helps boost the metabolism rate and reduce cholesterol. Since fish is also a rich source of protein, it can be beneficial further in breaking down fat cells.

Liver Cleanse - How to Have a Healthy Liver Function the Simple Way

The liver is the key organ for detoxification. If toxins are allowed to build up in the body, we might suffer from fatigue, bad breath, weight gain, cellulite, headaches, leaky gut, acne and a general lack of energy and wellness. Read on for simple but super effective ways to improve your liver function and take a giant leap towards great health and wellbeing.

Photo: Rosa Say

The following health tips will help optimize your liver function which in turn will clear your body of toxins.

AVOID PROCESSED FOOD AND ARTIFICIAL ADDITIVES
Sweeteners, preservatives, artificial food coloring and flavoring provide zero nutritional value and worse still, they may be toxic to our body. The Food Standards Authority in the UK linked the consumption of artificial food coloring to behavioral problems in children including temper tantrums, hyperactivity, allergies and short concentration spans. Eat natural food that you have prepared yourself without any additives for a healthier liver.

SKIP THE ALCOHOL
Alcohol can cause stress on the liver and may encourage toxicity. Drinking excessive amounts of alcohol, even though you may feel perfectly in control of your drinking and do not feel any side effects, can cause three different types of liver disease: cirrhosis, fatty liver and alcoholic hepatitis.

HAVE A DIET RICH IN FRESH FRUIT AND VEGETABLES
Fruit and vegetables contain a wealth of nutrients and vitamins such as vitamin C and beta-carotene that can support the liver function

DRINK PLENTY OF WATER
Water dilutes toxins and can flush them out of your body more quickly.

EAT LOTS OF FIBER
Fiber in your diet helps to avoid constipation. If you are constipation, there is more chance of toxins staying in your body and being absorbed through the wall of your large bowel.

CUT DOWN ON FATTY MEATS
Your liver has to work extremely hard to break down fatty meats such as beef, duck and lamb and similarly hydrogenated vegetable oils which may be found in margarine and many processed pastries, cakes, breads and other fast foods.

GO ON A LIVER FLUSH
A liver flush is basically a natural and home-based way to give your liver a thorough cleanse. There are many different recipes and methods for a liver cleanse diet. Check with your doctor first before embarking on a flush as if you have pre-existing conditions such as gallstones, a liver flush may exacerbate the problem. The basic recipe is almost always a mix of apple juice, epsom salts, olive oil and either grapefruit or lemons. I went on a liver cleanse at a health spa in Thailand where they added a fair whack of cayenne pepper to the mix. A typical liver flush might last 4-5 days and involves drinking this mixture up to 4 times a day while eating a light diet of raw fruit and vegetables. It is best to take time off work when doing this, as diarrhea is a virtual certainty.

Treat your liver well and you are treating your entire body well. A healthy liver will process the toxins so they will leave your body without causing harm.
