Yaron Cohen was born in Tel Aviv, Israel, in 1972, to a homemaking mother and a father who worked as a private secretary to a local judge. He was youngest of three children. As a young boy, Yaron was considered a creative child, he took an interest in singing and performing. Early childhood experimentation playing dress-up in her sister limor's clothes lead to him adopting the name sharon—the feminine form of "yaron"— in late adolescence. As Yaron grew into his androgyny, she decided to become a female and later changed his name to Dana International.
